LUXURY AND COMFORT AT VAN DER VALK HOTEL VOLENDAM

For the management duo Jan Broeks and Mireille Ortiz, that spacious entrance might just be the most beautiful of all the renovations. ‘We wanted guests to see a lot of activity and coziness upon arrival. When people come through the revolving door, they usually pause for a moment to look around,’ says Mireille. 'They are often pleasantly surprised because there is so much to see: the patisserie with fresh pastries, the co-lounge where people are working, the reception where you are warmly welcomed. The interior has also been lavishly redesigned with the luxurious staircase and a large chandelier. We wanted to make the renovated hotel chic, luxurious, cozy, and accessible. That has been amazingly successful.'

To achieve this, the hotel management could rely on the experienced team of Valk Design. Mireille: ‘From the right fabric to the best material, there were so many choices to make. I found it incredibly fun but also exciting, because how does something turn out? So far, we have only received compliments. Guests who have been coming here for decades, in particular, are impressed.’

WITH A MODERN TWIST

The beautiful location in the midst of Dutch nature is also reflected in the decor. For example, there is Café & Patisserie Zoetwaeter, a reference to the freshwater lakes that could be found until the eleventh century where the IJsselmeer is now located. Those lakes later became the Zuyderzee, to which the name of Restaurant ZYLT refers. From breakfast buffet to dinner, you can enjoy yourself here all day. 'The spacious restaurant is divided into sections making it cozy and atmospheric,' says Mireille. 'The large windows offer a view of the pond. The spacious terrace is truly an asset. Many natural materials are used in the interior. Modern and classic blend beautifully together.' This combination can also be seen on the menu. Jan says: 'We serve the well-known Van der Valk classics and dishes with local ingredients and a modern twist. This way, we remain recognizable to regular guests but also appeal to people who want something different. New is Snoozy Breakfast: on Sundays, you can have breakfast with us until half past two in the afternoon. Ideal after a night out in Amsterdam or for those who want to enjoy breakfast "outdoors" with us.'

IN THE GREEN

In all innovations, sustainability had high priority, says Jan. ‘In our family, we always build with an eye on the future. In doing so, we strive to achieve the BREEAM Excellent certificate for sustainability. For example, we are off the gas and have green climate installations.’ Green is also the Outdoor Location de Zegen, which opens next spring. Mireille: ‘This new outdoor location by the water is a beautiful place for a wedding ceremony, as we are an official wedding location. It is also a great place for a barbecue or company reception. For companies, we like to combine a meeting with an activity. Now that we have an expanded meeting center with eleven rooms, coffee square, and rooftop terrace, there are even more possibilities. Additionally, the new Bar 1480 is a great place for a drink.’ You can then spend the night in one of the 66 comfortable Deluxe rooms, and after another expansion, the hotel will even have 204 rooms. Hotel Volendam is a completely renovated hotel, where you can enjoy luxury and comfort in a familiar environment. Because no matter how much is renovated, the well-known hospitality will never disappear here!
