THE REMARKABLE HISTORY OF A STRIKING BUILDING

Van der Valk Hotel Breukelen

Van der Valk Hotel Breukelen is perhaps one of the most striking Van der Valk hotels due to its distinctive main building with orange roof tiles. In 2025, it no longer resembles the former Chinese restaurant that the Van der Valk family took over in the 1980s.

Hotel Breukelen has a special history. Who doesn't know 'the Chinese restaurant' on the A2 between Utrecht and Amsterdam? The striking building in a Chinese style is inspired by the imperial palace in Beijing and was built in the 1980s by Mr. Dave Wong. He wanted to make Oriental Palace Hotel one of the top ten hotel-restaurants in the world. In the middle of the Green Heart, the upper class of our country came to dine and sleep in the colorful building with red, green, and gold. In the garden, guests could sit in tea houses by ponds overlooking a piece of reconstructed Chinese wall. But due to high construction costs, Oriental Palace went bankrupt within five months.

EXPANSION

Van der Valk bought the empty building and invested heavily in the interior. The exterior of the building, now well-known throughout the Netherlands, remained unchanged. From the opening by Van der Valk, there was great interest. People even parked their cars on the emergency lane of the A2 and sometimes had to wait up to two hours before they could be seated at a table.

Over the years, Hotel Breukelen has continued to develop. At the end of 2011, a completely new wing was opened. It houses 86 luxury hotel rooms, 6 suites, and a wellness center with a swimming pool, sauna facilities, and a fitness room. In 2014, an extension was built on the other side, creating a luxury conference center.

MODERN AND STYLISH

Over thirty years after the takeover, the exterior of the main building was finally renovated. The striking orange roof tiles remained, as that colorful roof continues to be the eye-catcher. All Chinese elements, such as dragons and symbols, were removed. In their place, natural materials were used, making the exterior much better suited to the modern and stylish interior. When this renovation was completed in 2019, Nick Timmers took over the management from his parents. Nick grew up in the hotel where his parents, Pieter and Til Timmers, had been in charge from the beginning.
