LUXURY EXPERIENCE IN A FORMER PRISON

Van der Valk Het Arresthuis

Van der Valk Hotel Breukelen is perhaps one of the most striking Van der Valk hotels due to its distinctive main building with orange roof tiles. In 2025, it no longer resembles the former Chinese restaurant that the Van der Valk family took over in the 1980s.

Fourteen years ago, Van der Valk opened a second hotel in the city center of the cozy Roermond, half a kilometer from TheaterHotel De Oranjerie. The building has a special history, as it was used as a prison from 1863 to 2000 and from 2002 to 2007. With the opening of a new prison on the outskirts of Roermond, the doors at this location closed. After several years of vacancy, the building reopened in 2002 for five years as a prison for drug couriers and so-called 'swallowers'. Because only drug-related criminals end up in this house of detention, it earned the nickname 'Bolletjesbajes'. After another closure, Van der Valk purchased the property to convert it into a hotel in 2009. During an extensive renovation, the former prison was transformed into a luxury city hotel. Since the spring of 2011, guests can voluntarily confine themselves here.

FIVE-STAR STATUS

The austere cells have been transformed into forty charming hotel rooms and suites. Three former cells have been ingeniously connected to create a sleeping area, sitting area, and bathroom. During the extensive transformation, efforts were made to preserve authentic details of the prison. You can see the bars on the windows and original cell doors are still in use. The history is also reflected in the names of the rooms, such as Comfort and Deluxe Dungeons. The suites are named after old functions as well, for example, The Jailer is the room where the Jailer used to sit, and the lawyer's office is now Suite The Lawyer where you can spend the night.
Not only because of its history, this is a special hotel within Van der Valk. In August 2019, Het Arresthuis became the first Van der Valk hotel to receive a five-star status. One of the reasons for this recognition is the high level of personal service. It starts right at check-in: guests are welcomed with a glass of bubbles, their luggage is taken to the room, and homemade cookies are waiting.

FINE DINING

The culinary heart of Het Arresthuis is restaurant Damianz. Head chef Jeroen van Gansewinkel and his kitchen team specialize in Fine dining And let guests enjoy dinners with up to four to seven courses. Restaurant Damianz is well-regarded, with 16 Gault Millau points, attracting many guests from the region specifically.

Damianz is named after the penultimate bishop of the French era, Philippus Damianus, Count of Hoensbroek. The building right next to Het Arresthuis used to be a bishop's palace. Over the centuries, the hotel building has also served multiple functions. It has been a military hospital, barracks, and courthouse. Therefore, in 2025, Het Arresthuis is a unique location where luxury and history come together.
